Shiny Rates in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
Table of Contents
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are a mixed bag when it comes to shiny hunting. As basically one-to-one remakes of Diamond and Pearl, they unfortunately carry a lot of the same mistakes. For example, Diamond and Pearl did not have the Shiny Charm, so a good number of encounters don't use it. I know, I know, it's annoying and we can all be mad at ILCA for that. Anyway, it's still possible to get shiny Pokémon, and Poké Radar is a good way to get any missing Shiny Pokémon.
If you want to know why this page uses "shiny rates" instead of "shiny odds," "shiny chances," or "shiny probabilities" check out our guide on shiny rate verbiage. Long story short, we use "rate" to mean mathematical probability (i.e. a value between 0 and 1 that indicates how likely an event will occur) presented as fractions. For example, a rate of 1/4096 means "the probability of a shiny is one in an average of 4096 encounters".
This page applies to version 1.1.1 and beyond.

See Section Below, Shiny Charm does not work! |
linkBase Shiny Rate
The base shiny rate in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is 1/4096. If you have the shiny charm, the chance is not increased unless you are breeding eggs! For whatever reason, the developers of the game did not enable the Shiny Charm for most types of encounters.
linkStatic Encounters and Shiny Locks
Static encounters are the Pokémon that either require pressing A to battle or need to be walked in to (like a Legendary or Mythical encounter). Every single static encounter is not affected by the Shiny Charm, so they all have a 1/4096 chance of being shiny.
The only shiny locks in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are the gift Mew and Jirachi the player can receive in Floaroma Town based on save data on the console.
Yes, that means that all other Pokémon can be shiny! Go get a shiny Arceus, Shaymin, Darkrai, or any other Legendary or Mythical! I guess that's the trade-off for not having the Shiny Charm work on any of these encounters.
linkWild Encounters
Wild encounters occur when you walk in a patch of grass or in a cave. Most encounters in this game are "wild encounters." Here are the wild encounter rates (not including the Poké Radar):
Conditions | No. Rolls | Shiny Rate |
---|---|---|
Base Shiny Rate | 1 | 1/4096.00 |
Shiny Charm | 1 | 1/4096.00 |
Unfortunately, as mentioned above, the Shiny Charm does not work on wild encounters.
linkPoké Radar
The Poké Radar makes its return in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. By repeatedly encountering shaking patches of grass, you can greatly improve your shiny rate over the base chance from wild encounters. These rates are how likely a Shiny Patch is.

The table is a bit large, so here's a figure that plots those rates for you so you can see how they change. What's interesting is that the game has a calculation for what the rate would be if you had the Shiny Charm, but it is never used. The blue line is what the rate would be if the Shiny Charm check worked, and is shown only for theoretical purposes.
And, in case you were curious, here is a plot for your percent chance (i.e. 100 * 1 / rate
). Note that even with the Shiny Charm enabled, your chance wouldn't really improve all that much.
linkEggs
Eggs are largely unchanged since Sword & Shield. There's a quirk (or bug?) in the code that skips a shiny roll if any bonus is active. This is why the Shiny Charm rate on its own is weird!
Here are the rates for eggs depending on how you're breeding:
