After several months of waiting, Pokémon HOME has been updated to version 4.1.0 with full support for the Nintendo Switch versions of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. The update followed a nice maintenance window, and you'll need to update the app on your Switch and phone to access the service.
It's been a long time since the Switch ports were released as part of the franchise's 30th anniversary, and even though HOME support was promised from the start, it still took eight months. I can't believe these games released back in February.
As part of this update, Premium members now get a total of 300 boxes (9,000 Pokémon) and you can get a free Celebi for completing the FireRed or LeafGreen Pokédex.
How The Transfers Work
It is extremely important to understand that this is a one-way transfer. If you are still using some Pokémon in game, it might be worth while to double check they don't get transferred. Additionally, Pokémon from other games cannot be sent into FireRed or LeafGreen at all.
Due to how data is stored in the Generation 3 games compared to all of the updates made for current generations, it makes sense that GameFreak is going this route. The process mirrors the old Virtual Console transfer on the 3DS that used Poké Transporter to transfer an entire box at a time. However, there are a few other things to note:
- Boxes containing Pokémon with held items, Pokémon that know HM moves, or Eggs can't be sent.
- Special Pokémon that can only be caught once per save file can only be sent once per save file (this is likely to counteract cloning like the Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl measures several years ago).
- Your in-game Pokédex syncs to HOME each time you send a Pokémon over.
The nice thing is that once they're in HOME, they can go anywhere HOME reaches. They can even visit Pokémon Champions!
Just remember to remove held items and delete HM moves before transfer. Also note that you can only transfer a box every minute, so if you have a lot of Pokémon you want to pull out of the games, it will take some time.
Free Celebi for Completing the Pokédex
Completing the FireRed and LeafGreen Pokédex and syncing to HOME will give you a free Celebi gift. Simply deposit a Pokémon while having a full Pokédex and you'll receive the Celebi though Mystery Gift on the mobile version of the app.
Other Pokémon HOME Changes in 4.1.0
As noted earlier, Premium members get a total of 300 boxes now with 9,000 Pokémon of storage. The Premium Plan is not changing price.
Pokémon caught in GO Safari Balls in Pokémon GO can be sent to Home now, but they arrive in Strange Balls.
Several new Research Tasks have been added, along with a FireRed and LeafGreen Pokédex to complete.
